A shared journey through South Korea became an opportunity for Catholics from across Asia and Europe to deepen their faith through prayer, reflection, and the witness of the Korean martyrs.
Fondacio Asia brought together 44 pilgrims from Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, and Thailand for a Sacred Pilgrimage in South Korea from September 4 to 9, 2026. Their journey centered on places connected with the Korean martyrs, inviting participants to reflect on the faith that sustained generations of Christians.
Walking Through the Story of the Korean Martyrs
The pilgrims visited Galmaemot and Sinri Shrines, followed by other locations associated with the Haemi martyrs, including the Queen’s House, Sanghong-ri Chapel, Haemi Castle, and Haemi International Shrine.
These were not simply historical destinations. Through prayer and reflection, the pilgrims encountered the stories of Christians who remained faithful to Christ despite difficult circumstances. The journey invited participants to consider what the martyrs’ witness means for Christians living their faith today.
One significant moment was a Holy Mass in the Darkness, which offered the pilgrims an opportunity to reflect on faith amid uncertainty and difficulty. The experience connected the history of the Korean martyrs with the continuing call for Christians to trust in Christ even when the path ahead is unclear.
Faith Shared Across Nations
The pilgrimage also became an experience of communion among Catholics from different countries. Though the participants came from Indonesia, Italy, Malaysia, and Thailand, they shared the same journey of prayer and encountered the same story of Christian faith.
After several days of visiting the martyr sites, the group gathered for integration sessions on September 8. Participants shared their experiences and reflected on how the pilgrimage could influence their own lives and communities after returning home.
This reflection is an important part of pilgrimage. A sacred journey does not end when pilgrims leave a shrine. The experience is meant to accompany them home, allowing what they have prayed about and discovered to become part of their everyday Christian witness.
Carrying the Witness Home
The Korean martyrs’ witness continues to speak to the universal Church because their faith belongs not only to Korea. Their example reminds Catholics everywhere that discipleship involves perseverance, prayer, and a willingness to remain faithful to Christ.
For the 44 pilgrims, the journey concluded in Seoul before they returned to their respective countries. Yet the deeper pilgrimage continues in the communities they return to, where they can carry with them renewed faith and a greater appreciation for the witness of those who came before them.
