SEOUL, South Korea: In a quiet but profound moment of faith amidst the rigors of mandatory military service, celebrated South Korean actor and K-pop star Cha Eun-woo has officially entered the Catholic Church.

The 29-year-old artist, widely known for his striking visuals and successful career as a member of the boy group ASTRO, received the Sacrament of Baptism in June 2026. According to his agency, Fantagio, the ceremony took place at a Catholic church on a military base, where he took the baptismal name John the Apostle.

Finding Faith in the Ranks

In South Korea, all able-bodied men between the ages of 18 and 28 are required to serve in the military . Cha Eun-woo enlisted in July 2025 and is currently serving as a corporal in the Ministry of National Defense military band, specifically the Fanfare Detachment . He is scheduled to complete his service on January 27, 2027 .

During this period of intense physical and mental discipline, enlisted soldiers are given the opportunity to attend religious services held within their unit divisions . Participation is entirely voluntary, allowing soldiers to explore different faiths during their personal time on weekends or holidays . It was within this structured environment that Cha Eun-woo, who had previously kept his religious beliefs private, chose to embrace the Catholic faith .

A Global Star’s Journey

Born Lee Dong-min, Cha Eun-woo debuted with ASTRO in 2016 and quickly rose to international fame . Beyond his music career, which includes his 2024 solo EP Entity, he has built a formidable acting portfolio with lead roles in popular dramas such as True Beauty, Gangnam Beauty, and Wonderful World.

His global reach was evident during his Just One 10 Minute [Mystery Elevator] fan meeting tour, which brought him to the Philippines in March 2024. “I’m always happy to perform for my Filipino fans who always cheer for me loudly,” he remarked ahead of the Manila show.

Despite his massive success and the recent release of his Netflix series The WONDER fools, Cha Eun-Woo‘s decision to be baptized points to a deeper, personal search for meaning away from the spotlight. By choosing the name John the Apostle. The “disciple whom Jesus loved” he aligns himself with a legacy of steadfast loyalty and profound spiritual insight.
