Escalating Violence Casts a Shadow of Fear Over Quetta’s Christian Community

Quetta, Pakistan – Christians in Quetta, Pakistan are living in renewed fear after coordinated militant attacks across Balochistan province disrupted daily life and prevented many faithful from attending Sunday Mass on February 1.

On the morning of January 31, families awoke to the sound of gunfire and explosions as clashes between security forces and separatist groups spread across several cities. The two-day violence left more than 190 people dead and damaged homes, hospitals, schools, banks, and marketplaces, forcing many residents to remain indoors for safety.

The attacks deeply unsettled the small Christian community, especially after the temporary abduction of a Christian government official during the unrest. Although she was later rescued, the incident heightened anxiety among believers who already face challenges as a religious minority in the region.

Security lockdowns sealed off areas surrounding Quetta’s Holy Rosary Cathedral, allowing only those living nearby to attend Mass while many others prayed from their homes. Church leaders continue to call for peace, dialogue, and protection as families consider relocating amid ongoing instability.

Christians make up less than one percent of the province’s population and have endured past violence, making each new escalation a source of profound concern. For many parents, the greatest fear is the safety and future of their children as uncertainty shapes everyday life.In this difficult moment, we are invited to respond as one Church. Let us come together in prayer and turn to the Rosary, asking our Blessed Mother to intercede for our brothers and sisters experiencing fear and persecution. May Mary wrap them in her mantle of protection, strengthen their faith, and lead their communities toward peace.
