Catholic Activist Jimmy Lai Sentenced to 20 Years in Hong Kong

HONG KONG – In a verdict that has sent shockwaves through the global Catholic community and human rights circles, pro-democracy advocate and outspoken Catholic Jimmy Lai was sentenced on February 9, 2026, to 20 years in prison. The sentencing, handed down by a Hong Kong court under the controversial National Security Law, marks a somber milestone in what supporters describe as a years-long campaign of politicized persecution against the 78-year-old media tycoon.

Lai, the founder of the now-defunct Apple Daily newspaper, was convicted in December 2025 on charges of “collusion with foreign forces” and “conspiracy to publish seditious materials” under the draconian National Security Law. Since his initial arrest in August 2020, he has faced a barrage of legal challenges, including convictions for fraud and unlawful assembly, which have kept him behind bars for the better part of the last six years.

A Faith Refined in the Crucible of Imprisonment

While the world knows Jimmy Lai as a titan of the media industry and a fearless advocate for democracy, his identity as a Catholic has become the cornerstone of his resilience. Having converted to Catholicism in 1997, after years of attending Mass with his Catholic wife, Teresa, Lai has often spoken of his faith as the source of his strength. His daughter, Claire Lai, recently shared that her father’s incarceration has only served to “deepen his faith”.

“He wants to be remembered as a faithful servant of Our Lord,” Claire told EWTN News. Despite his declining physical health and limited access to the Sacraments, Lai reportedly spends his days in solitary confinement reading the Gospels, praying, and drawing images of the Crucifixion and the Blessed Mother. One such drawing was recently installed at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., serving as a poignant reminder of his spiritual union with the suffering of Christ. Father Robert Sirico, a friend and supporter of Lai, noted that Lai sees his imprisonment as a way of joining in Christ’s passion on the cross.

Global Outcry and the Church’s Prophetic Voice

The sentencing has drawn swift condemnation from international leaders and religious figures. In November 2023, a group of ten Catholic bishops and archbishops from around the world issued a joint statement calling for Lai’s immediate release, describing his prosecution as an affront to the rule of law and freedom of expression. “There is no place for such cruelty and oppression in a territory that claims to uphold the rule of law and respect the right to freedom of expression,” the prelates declared.

The situation in Hong Kong remains precarious for the Church. Father Vincent Woo, a priest of the Diocese of Hong Kong, told EWTN News in 2022 that religious leaders in the region face “tremendous consequences” if they criticize the government, leading many to hesitate in speaking out publicly against the Communist Party. However, advocates at a 2025 hearing of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom warned of “severe violations of religious freedom” by the Chinese Communist Party, with the government reportedly “forcibly eradicating religious elements that are not in line with the CCP’s agenda”.

A Legacy of Courage

As Jimmy Lai begins this lengthy sentence, his plight remains a powerful witness to the cost of standing for truth and justice. For the faithful, his story is not just one of political struggle, but of a man who has chosen to carry his cross with dignity, trusting in the ultimate justice of God. His unwavering commitment to his faith, even in the face of immense suffering, has led some to suggest he should be recognized as a modern-day martyr.

In these trying times, we are reminded of the words of the Gospel: “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:10). The global Catholic community continues to hold Jimmy Lai and all those suffering for their faith in Hong Kong in their prayers, seeking the intercession of the Blessed Mother for their protection and release.

A Spiritual Resolution in Times of Trial

In the face of such profound challenges, the faithful are called to deepen their spiritual lives, finding strength and solace in the Sacraments and prayer. Let us turn to the Sacrament of Confession, seeking God’s mercy and grace to endure trials with fortitude. Let us spend time in Eucharistic Adoration, finding peace and renewed hope in the Real Presence of Christ. The Holy Rosary offers a powerful intercession, uniting our prayers with the Blessed Mother for peace and protection. Through active participation in the Holy Mass and reception of the Eucharist, we are nourished by the Body and Blood of Christ, strengthening us for our earthly pilgrimage. Finally, let us immerse ourselves in Sacred Scripture, allowing the Living Word of God to illuminate our path and inspire us to be agents of peace and justice in our communities.
